The High School Algebra course covers all algebraic concepts from Pre-Algebra through Algebra 2. It is divided into 4 sections. Each session is intended to last one 18 weeks (one semester). Students will meet 3 days per week, 1 hour each time, for classroom instruction. Tutoring and extra help may be scheduled individually. Practice problems, quizzes, and tests will be administered at home in order to maximize instruction time.
Session I – Structure of Mathematics and One Variable Sentences
Students will learn the language of algebra, the basic rules for numbers and operations, and how to solve one variable, first degree equations and inequalities. It is necessary that students have a basic knowledge of operations with Whole numbers, Fraction, and Decimals..
Session II – Systems of equations and polynomials
Students will extend their knowledge of solving one variable open sentences to solving open sentences with 2 or more variables. Also, operations with exponents and polynomials, including factoring will be covered. A graphing calculator is suggested for this course.
Session III – Rational and Irrational Expressions
Students will extend their knowledge of solving open sentences to solving rational
equations and inequalities. Also, Students will work with radical expressions and
complex numbers. A graphing calculator is suggested for this course.
Session IV – Conic sections and Logarithms
Students will study all the conic sections and their graphs, as well as exponential and logarithmic functions. If time allows, an introduction to statistics will be included. A graphing calculator is suggested for this course.
