College Prep Composition is an 18-week, three part course on writing with the goal of preparing students for college compositions. Students may take any section individually or any combination of the three sections. Students will meet 2 times per week for approximately 1 hour each time. Individual appointments with one’s writing coach may replace class time or be scheduled in addition to class time.
Session I – Writing Basics (4 weeks, 8 sessions)
Students will be instructed in the writing process: preparing, creating, composing, and polishing. Rules for punctuation, grammar and structure will be discussed but the primary activity of the class will be one-on-one and small group coaching. Students will write, have it critiqued by a writing coach or their small group and then rewrite the piece.
Session II – The Essay (5 weeks, 10 sessions)
Students will focus on the standard five paragraph essay. Emphasis will be placed on writing skills necessary on College entrance exams like the ACT and SAT. Students will receive instruction on form and content but the primary activity will be writing, critiquing by a coach or small group and rewriting.
Session III – The Research Paper (9 weeks, 18 sessions)
Students will be required to write a research paper on the topic of their choice.
Instruction will be given on how to research, taking notes, documenting sources and building the composition. Students will be expected to complete a paper 20 pages in length. Again coaching will be the primary means of instruction.
Cost: $325 per semester (payments can be made as follows: $20 per week, $75 per month.)
